Spinosaurus(SPINE-oh-SORE-us)
where: Swamps of North Africa
when: Early to Late Cretaceous Period, about 112 to 97 million years ago
who: Described by German paleontologist Ernst Stromer in 1915
what: About 50 feet long and between 7 and 9 tons, the Spinosaurus is a large theropod. Since the 1920s, it has been a contender for the largest and longest of all theropods. It is a carnivore, eating both meat and fish, and it probably lived on both land and water. One of its defining characteristics is its large neural spines, which protrude from its vertebrae, which was probably used for cooling purposes.
